On My Mind

My mom loves to tell the story of how I got in trouble at the tender age of 6 ( see photo ). I had a note from my first grade teacher, Ms. Mayfield, that I was instructed to give to my mother. As I got off the school bus with my head bowed and the note firmly in my fingers behind my back, I approached the front door as my mother stood waiting to greet me. Before I allowed that note to pass through my hands, these words crossed my lips: “Now momma, it's not what you think it says.” And with my eyes wide open as I brought the note from behind my back to give to her, I repeated: “It's not what you think it says. It's not that I talk too much, it's that I know too much.” And with that, my mom began to laugh. She got the biggest chuckle out of me explaining away my excessive talking and my need to visit everyone's desk and tell them all I knew.

Today, not much has changed ( notice facial expression ). There are no desks to visit, but I still talk a lot. You'll never hear anyone describe me as quiet and reserved. But as to that “know too much” comment I made as a child, I'm not as bold with such declarations. Yes, I still have a constant hunger for knowledge and life. And just like in my first grade classroom, I'd like to share a little of that pursuit with you here, from time to time. Just whatever is on my mind…………
